Upper Delaware River - near Stalker, PA |
Interestingly, the trek I took north
along the Upper Delaware River, betwixt & between New York & Pennsylvania came up as a topic of conversation at the symposium on sustainability - Meliora 2006. |
|
In heading to Meliora some days
before, it was a path I chose at random really; tracking my way from Narrowsburg, NY into Greenwich, NY & other points south of Syracuse. |
PA Hwy 652 bridge over to Narrowsburg, NY - Delaware River
|
near Sherburne, NY Blanding Rd - 'farm & house' - across tracks on right |
Unknowingly, I chose the exact route
of a proposed high voltage line from Canada to New York City. All along the way, in people's yards & along roadsides, were signs stuck in the ground protesting the project. Near Sherburne, I pulled off to take a picture of a lovely farm & house veiled in a thick grove of old maples. |
|
An elderly, young woman stepped out
onto her porch demanding to know what I was up to. "Why taking pictures of your lovely home," I shouted back from across the road. Seeing she was still a little cross, I asked her about the 'no powerlines' sign she had in the yard. |

|
By now she was out in the yard moving closer. I stepped across the narrow county
road & stood at the head of her lane ready to hear a good local version of this powerline story. |
Hwy 12 - Sherburne Four Corners, NY |
Folks all along this proposed energy
interstate from Canada to NY City were upset, & probably powerless to do much about it. I told her that when I was a teenager, there was a big battle over a twin dam project along the New River. The dam was never built. |
|
It was the year the dam project
was finally and officially quashed - 1977 - that I moved into my little farmhouse along the New River's south fork. She had never heard of the New River |

New Bloomfield, PA - Hwy 274 |
The delemmas & puzzles that
come with our endless need for 'go juice' are not only still here, but even more complex. This woman, though, was a country mouse through & through. No city mouse's need was great enough for her to have to put up with their footprint across her land. |
|
We chatted for some time until
I noticed I had to keep chasing the sun over the next hill. I have always been pleasantly surprized with such chance meetings. They are unexpected & brief, yet often the conversation struck sticks to you in ways that are lasting and unforseeable. |

This Meliora '06 gallery tour has the trip to New York as well as the return leg through western PA,
West Virginia & northern VA down to Blackburg. The gallery for the trip up starts at the PA Hwy 652 bridge at Narrowsburg, NY. Just before the bridge, River Rd begins. I follow it up river, staying on the PA side all the way up to Equinunk, PA - some 40 miles north. The next morning I start all over in Susquehanna, PA, heading north into NY towards Norwich. |
