This would be very difficult to maintain if I had to clamp the sides to the fronts.
Machined this way, they are simply tapped into place with a mallet & left alone to dry.

- a note regarding the marking gauge etchings -
Even after sanding, much of the mark is left - these marks are remnants of the construction process,
& much like construction line remnants in technical drawings, these left over marks,
in no way, reflect an absence of quality, or a lack of attention to detail.

Quite the contrary actually - they are remnant signs of very careful hand work on your piece.
In many cases, drawers inparticular, to sand out this mark, would result malformed lines
